A police officer killed a man who had slashed at the Roosevelt Avenue-74th Street subway station in Jackson Heights. The man, identified as Juventino Mendez of Jamaica, Queens, had used an eight-inch steak knife to slash a man he was arguing with on the street, and chased him into the subway. Apparently Mendez couldn't find the man, so he threatened other straphangers on the mezzanine level instead. According to the NY Post, the police officer, who was patrolling the turnstiles, asked Mendez to drop the knife numerous times and finally shot him. Bystanders believe that Mendez was drunk, and a mother, who reached the mezzanine from the platform, fainted when the shot rang out.
