The NYPD has released surveillance video that shows the alleged killer in yesterday's slaying of a bodega clerk in Bushwick. They have identified the victim as 52-year-old Swadh Maged, who reports have described as a native of Yemen who worked hard to support his 13 children. No arrests have been made.
According to authorities, Maged was shot and killed at around 6:45 a.m. at the 427 Central Ave Deli near Madison Street in Bushwick. Surveillance video shows an unknown assailant entering the store, pulling a gun out of a plastic bag, approaching the counter and firing at Maged; the NYPD says the suspect struck him several times before fleeing in a light-colored van.
Though the NYPD lists Maged's address as the deli's, news outlets have reported that he resided on Staten Island, having moved to the United States from Yemen over a decade ago. His cousin, Irbrahim Alnamer, told CBS News that Maged financially supported his wife and 13 children. "He work hard for his family. This is what I can say about him,” Alnamer said. “He have no problem with anybody."
No cash or merchandise was taken during the shooting, and the NYPD is searching for a motive. Alnmar told reporters some customers made "trouble" for Maged when he refused to offer them credit for purchases, but that has not been confirmed.
Maged's murder is the second recorded homicide in Bushwick this month. On April 6th, 29-year-old Bushwick resident Ivan Martinez was shot in front of 320 Suydam Street near Knickerbocker Ave at around 6 p.m.; the NYPD has since arrested 22-year-old Christopher Ortiz on murder and weapons charges.
The NYPD says the suspect in yesterday's slaying was last seen wearing a grey and yellow jacket.
