File under: bad parenting techniques. A mother in Greenridge was arrested for allegedly burning her 11-year-old son with a hot butter knife in order to "teach him a lesson" for acting out, cops say. Why not just show him this?
Mervat Elhanafy reportedly heated the dull butter knife on the stovetop before hitting her son on his legs and left arm in their home on Tuesday, according to court papers. His skin blistered and peeled badly enough to require hospitalization—"They're pretty bad blisters," said one officer at the scene. The boy apparently called 911 on his mother, and Elhanafy was arrested and later booked for assault, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a weapon. The child has been placed into temporary custody of another relative.
At her arraignment in Stapleton Criminal Court yesterday, Elhanafy's lawyer said that the boy had become "so unruly recently that she had sought a Person in Need of Supervision, or PINS, warrant...I don’t think it was her intention to harm the child."
