Proving the adage "better late than never," Governor Cuomo signed a law yesterday prohibiting convicted sex offenders from driving school buses. "This law will protect children by making sure those convicted of sexual offenses and other serious crimes are disqualified from becoming school bus drivers," Cuomo said in a statement. Then presumably, he continued: "How the hell have we not passed this law before? Geez, do we look bad."

The law also prohibits those convicted of first degree vehicular manslaughter from becoming a school bus driver for five years after conviction, along with those busted for criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance. We couldn't reach Sex Offending School Bus Drivers Local 99, but we're pretty sure they're pissed. However, Kid-Toughening Wheel Slingers Local 249 should be pleased that they were omitted from the statute.
