The hated annual SantaCon ritual has finally brought winter to our warm, snow-starved city—the Department of Sanitation issued a "Snow Alert" for today, beginning at 3 p.m.

Although this isn't a forecast, the agency says that the alert indicates the potential for snow and allows it to prepare for a possible response by notifying other city agencies and loading salt trucks, attaching plows, and preparing tire chains.

A very light snow is already dusting some parts of the city, and it's expected to turn into rain later in the afternoon and then change back to snow in the evening. We'll only get a half-inch of snow at best, but areas outside of the city could see several inches.

Take that, global warming.
