The National Rifle Association's off-the-rails press conference to address gun violence—which blamed the Newtown school massacre on everything except, basically, semi-automatic weapon ownership—has left many disgusted, including the Rev. Al Sharpton. At his weekly address, Sharpton promised to hold protests against the NRA, "We need to get a real movement against those who get rich off the perpetuation of killing."

The Daily News reports that Sharpton explained, "The only purpose of assault weapons is for war. You don’t hunt with assault weapons. Nobody shoots down prey with so many bullets you couldn’t eat the prey." Which is exactly the point of NRA-supporting Senator Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia), who said, "I just came with my family from deer hunting. I’ve never had more than three shells in a clip. Sometimes you don’t get more than one shot anyway at a deer." Also, the numbers of hunters have dropped to record lows.

As for NRA head Wayne LaPierre's suggestion to have armed guards at every school, Sharpton said, "It was one of the most asinine statements I’ve heard in a long time."
