A gruesome scene unfolded in the Riverdale section of the Bronx this morning when an elderly woman reportedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a 1 train as it pulled into the elevated station at 231st Street. It has not been officially confirmed whether she fell or jumped, but one witness tells The Daily News that the unidentified 74-year-old woman jumped onto the tracks at 9:34 a.m. "She dove into it. She didn't say anything," says one Erica Tuttle. The victim's body was stuck on the tracks for some time before emergency crews removed it, in full view of passers-by on the street below.

One pedestrian who was walking along on Broadway under the tracks tells the Post, "I just saw the leg and stepped back and walked away. I didn't want to look at it—it was too disgusting. Blood was just dripping onto the street." Up on the platform, another witness tells the tabloid the woman "just toppled forward, face first, a split second before the train hit. She knew the train was coming. When trains come in, people step back, they don't step forward. Everybody was screaming and looked away. People were asking, 'Was that a person?' They couldn't believe it. Everybody was hysterical."
