Samuel LeFrak, patriarch of the Lefrak real estate family, died yesterday at 85. LeFrak was primarily known for building decent apartments for the middle-class in six story brick buildings. His most famous project is most likely the 5,000 apartment complex of Lefrak City in Queens. He was an urban answer to William Levitt.

Everyone that I know who has lived in one of his buildings was satisfied with the experience.

From the Times: "Mr. LeFrak often repeated what his parents had told him: just be smart and never get caught overleveraged."
