So... wham! It's hot, humid, and not even officially summer yet. The forecast shows temps hitting 90 for the next couple of days before dropping to the 80s for the end of the week. The humidity might subside a bit but the sun will remain with us throughout.
Some cheer and some grumble as the concrete oven heats up, but now we are blessed with another excuse to indulge in the wonderful treats of summer both old and new school. Italian ices can be found from almost any decent pizza parlor. Mister Softee ice cream trucks can be found wandering the streets of the city, annoying neighborhoods with the repetitive song that is music to our bleeding ears. Sno-cones or shaved ice wagons can be found near many playgrounds or by an open fire hydrant near you. There's nothing like some ice chips with colored sugar poured on top. Gothamist still can't really tell if there's a difference between the cherry and strawberry flavors.
On the less charming, chain and franchise level, there's options like Jamba Juice which danced in to the city much to the delight of sweating city dwellers and now has 11 locations in Manhattan. If you've got a hankerin' for something a bit less healthy, then Cold Stone Creamery also just arrived in the neighborhood. Making your own concoction much like Steve's Ice Cream used to do back in the 80's (what happened to them?), but we get an extra kick out of making them sing after we tip them.
The list goes on and on and on. Please help us help you cool off this summer and let us know what guilty chillin' pleasures you enjoy in the city turned EZ-Bake Oven. We're off to go run through the sprinklers...
