The two former NYPD "Rape Cops" who were acquitted last year of raping a woman in her East Village apartment in 2008 must turn themselves in tomorrow to serve time at Rikers Island for their criminal misconduct convictions. Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata tried to have the misdemeanor charges thrown out last month, but were denied by a panel of state appellate judges.

Moreno, who helped falsify a 911 call, left and entered the victims apartment at least three times, sung a Bon Jovi song to the victim while spooning with her on her bed, and admitted to using a condom when confronted by her in person, received a sentence of one year. Mata, Moreno's partner, who sat idly as Moreno interacted with the victim, will serve 60 days.

To remind you of how revolting the whole trial was, Moreno's lawyer once referred to the victim's vagina as a "Venus fly trap" and invoked the actor Vin Diesel to try to discredit the victim's description of Moreno.

Both officers were fired following their convictions for criminal misconduct, and their pensions were terminated. If you want to know more about how the jury reached their decision to acquit the officers, you can read an account from one juror that we published here.
