A Queens man was charged with throwing his ex-girlfriend's pet pug off a balcony and killing it. The former couple were reportedly arguing over who would care for the dog at the time.

Yuk Cheung, 35, has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals after he allegedly tossed 12-year-old pug Yoda off the seventh floor balcony of his Fresh Meadows apartment on March 17th. According Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown, Cheung had been arguing with ex-girlfriend Jennifer Chan in the apartment, picked up the dog, told Chan she “would not have to worry about the dog anymore,” then took Yoda to the balcony and tossed him to the sidewalk 70 feet below.

When Chan asked Cheung where Yoda was, Cheung allegedly told her the pup had "slipped," according to the Post. He then allegedly went downstairs, picked up Yoda's body and tossed it in a dumpster.

Cheung also allegedly told authorities, when questioned about the dog four days later, that he tripped going to the balcony and lost his grip on the dog; in another story, he reportedly said the dog leapt out of his hands and jumped through the railing. The DA's Office says Cheung would have had to have "propelled the dog about 40 feet through the air" for Yoda to have cleared the balcony.

"Such acts of aggression towards defenseless animals cannot—and will not—be tolerated in Queens County," Brown said in a statement.

Cheung was arraigned yesterday and has had bail set at $10K. He faces up to two years in prison if convicted.
