Representative Grace Meng, who represents a portion of Queens, was assaulted and robbed in Washington D.C. on Tuesday night.

The congresswoman was on her way home from eating dinner near 6th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue when an assailant struck the back of her head, grabbed her Gucci purse and fled. She was left with a bruise on her chin and underwent a CAT scan at George Washington University Hospital. Though she did not return to work on Wednesday, Meng said she is recovering.

"While this was a frightening ordeal, I fortunately was not seriously injured," Meng said in a statement. "Obviously, things could have been much worse."
