A woman says her pit bull puppy saved her from a would-be rapist in Brooklyn Monday. ABC reports that Maya Fairweather, 18, had been walking her 5-month-old dog Apollo when she was attacked by an unidentified man in Red Hook Recreation Area park.
The NY Post reports that Fairweather had been visiting her boyfriend in the neighborhood and took the young pit bull for a walk just after 10 p.m. Monday. While in the park, she says, “I felt someone pull my headphones,” she recalled to the tabloid. “I thought it was my boyfriend grabbing me, so I turned around and smiled — but it wasn’t my boyfriend."
Fairweather's attacker pushed her to the ground and attempted to sexually assault her, but was stopped by a bite to the leg from Apollo.
“I heard him say, ‘F-k!’ and I was able to run away. I ran across the street,” Fairweather told the Post. The man reportedly struggled to shake the dog off, and ultimately ran away, out of the park.
Fairweather reported the incident at the local police station. An NYPD spokesperson told Gothamist this morning that Fairweather does not wish to cooperate with an ongoing investigation, and that no further investigation is taking place at this time.
