File under: this is why we can't have anything nice. The pianos that were placed around the five boroughs for the pure enjoyment of New Yorkers are still around through July 5th, as long as someone doesn't destroy them all by then.

Less than a week after they were unveiled, the piano in Athens Square Park in Astoria was practically mutilated. According to the Queens Gazette, on June 26th someone tore off all of its keys, and removed most of the inner workings. Sing for Hope's Christ Herbert told the paper, “It’s an unfortunate event. The piano was removed, however, we hope to be able to bring a replacement to Athens Square Park soon.”

When the "Play Me, I'm Yours" installation is removed on the 5th, the pianos will be donated to schools... so hopefully there will be some left!
