The Times profiles a philanthropic effort by P.S. 234 in TriBeCa. The school's children and teachers had to flee the area during September 11, 2001. After being flooded with generosity. the principal created a program to teach the students about giving back. When I was in the third grade, the famine in Ethiopia was the lead news story, and my friends and I would go and collect money in our neighborhoods because we wanted to help out. We didn't work under any sort of formal program - we just brought the money to our third grade teacher, Miss Kaufman.
