A woman crossing a Greenwich Village street was killed by a private sanitation truck driver late Tuesday night.
Police say officers responded to a 911 call at around 11:40 p.m. regarding a person who was struck at Greenwich Avenue and West 8th Street. There they found a 60-year-old woman unconscious and unresponsive with severe body trauma. EMS took her to Lenox NY Healthplex, where she was pronounced dead.
According to a preliminary investigation, police say the unnamed woman was crossing West 8th Street from north to south when the truck driver, who was traveling east, struck her.
The 46-year-old male driver stayed at the scene and has not been charged yet.
A witness told the NY Post, "She basically got pulled underneath and it crushed her skull, you could hear everything break… I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. There’s no words to describe when you literally watch someone die."
Another spoke to the Daily News, "The woman was under the truck laying on her stomach, there was a lot of blood on the sidewalk. A lot of blood near her head coming out of her mouth."
