The unthinkable has happened: Donald Trump has been elected the next President of the United States. After a stunning Election Day that went into the early morning, Trump prevailed and Hillary Clinton called him to concede. Addressing the crowd, he said, "Sorry to keep you waiting... complicated business... I've just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us—it's about us—on our victory. I congratulated her and her family on a hard-fought campaign. I mean, she fought very hard.... We owe her a major debt of gratitude to her service of her country.

"It's time for us to come together as one united people. It's time. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans. And this is so important to me," he told the exhilarated crowd at the midtown Manhattan Hilton.

“Ours was not a campaign, it was a movement," Trump said, "America will no longer settle for anything less than the best... We will seek common ground, not hostility. Partnership, not conflict."

Trump thanked his family and his team:

The "short-fingered vulgarian," whose long, surprising march from entitled NYC developer to reality star and global brand, has successfully manipulated white, working class anger at the Washington establishment. Votes are still being counted at of 2:48 a.m., but it appears that Trump is at 279 electoral votes, with wins in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania sending him over the top.

The race was tight, but Trump built an impressive electoral lead. Many pundits talked about the brash and often crass Republican "over performing" in various counties in battleground states, like bringing out more white voters in rural Florida or taking formerly Obama counties in Michigan.

Now we have a Commander-in-Chief who delights in belittling people; promotes racist and xenophobic ideas; and was caught on tape talking about grabbing women's genitals.

Trump broke Hillary Clinton's "blue wall" by winning traditionally Democratic states like Wisconsin and Michigan. Republicans have kept control of the House and also seemed poised to keep control of the Senate. However, that's not all good news for the GOP, since Trump loves revenge.

Financial markets worldwide tumbled in reaction to the news. In the United States, the Dow had dropped 600 points in after-hours trading. Gold is up by more than 4%.

Trump has defied expectations.
