A pregnant Long Island woman was fatally shot while sitting in a car outside her home this weekend. Police say that Milagro "Millie" Canjura, 31, was found inside her 2011 Toyota Camry in Bay Shore around 8:40 p.m. Saturday. She had been shot six times; she and her unborn daughter were both pronounced dead at Southside Hospital.
"Her windows were shattered. I'm looking from here and I'm like, 'Oh my God, Millie just got shot,'" Canjura's neighbor, who did not want to be identified, told Newsday. "And then we didn't see her move." No arrests have been made in the case yet, and police say the investigation is ongoing.
Canjura lived alone in a basement apartment; her husband is currently in prison. According to the Post, the two were reportedly on good terms, and Canjura would eagerly await letters from him. Newsday adds:
The neighbor said Canjura asked her on Saturday to let her know when the mail arrived. That night, the neighbor sent Canjura a text that the mail was there. About 8:30 p.m., Canjura picked up the mail and went back to her car.
According to neighbors, Canjura had already picked out the name Kamila for her baby, who was due in December. "I would ask her how the pregnancy was going and she'd say, 'Fine! She's moving in there!' She was having cravings and stuff...she was very happy," the neighbor said.
Another neighbor told the Post that Canjura "had a previous pregnancy where she lost twins" last year. "She would always see my kids and hug them and cry," the neighbor sad. "I would tell her, 'Don’t lose hope. You’re going to have one one day.' And finally, this pregnancy. She went through it, and it was fine."
