An unidentified organ believed to be a human heart was found hidden outside of an East Village housing complex Wednesday morning. According to the NYPD, the grisly discovery happened at 10:30 a.m. October 5th when a 67-year-old man removed a potted plant from the garbage area of the Riis II NYCHA building at 749 FDR Drive. After tossing aside the plant inside, the unidentified man found a pink box at the bottom of the pot.

A police spokesperson confirmed that inside the box was organ material of unknown origin, and police sources told the Daily News the organ is indeed a human heart. The man immediately turned the box over to the NYPD, and a medical examiner is currently working to determine the origin of the tissue.

Police are currently investigating the incident to determine if any foul play occurred.
