An escaped prisoner is believed to be somewhere in Newark Airport, after reportedly climbing through the ceiling during a "routine" bathroom trip in Terminal C.

The getaway was first reported by NBC 4. A law enforcement source told the outlet that a prisoner in the custody of Customers and Border Protection "disappeared" while using the restroom, and that "investigators believe he may be hiding in the ceiling somewhere."

A spokesperson for the Port Authority police confirmed to Gothamist that they are assisting in the search for the individual, which was first reported to them at around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The airport is not currently locked down. There are reports of a heavy police presence in the area, though an employee who answered the phone at Terminal C's CBGB restaurant (yep!) said they hadn't noticed anything unusual. United Airlines operates all flights in and out of Terminal C.

Inquiries to Customers and Border Protection were not immediately returned.

According to the PA Police spokesperson, who declined to share their name, "the incident is still under investigation."

We'll update this post as more information becomes available.

UPDATE: The prisoner was caught just after 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a Port Authority police spokesperson confirmed. "PAPD responded and was able to apprehend the prisoner," the spokesperson said. "The incident resulted in minimal operation impact to Newark Liberty International Airport."

Further answers about the attempted escape were not immediately available.
