The NYPD is investigating the death of a 57-year-old financier who was found dead Monday afternoon inside of his condominium on the DUMBO waterfront. Neil Smith was discovered naked in bed with a pillow covering his head, a spokesman said.
The spokesman added that Smith's death is being investigated as possibly suspicious, as it was not immediately clear that Smith had died of natural causes.
Police responded to a call regarding an unconscious person at 1 Main Street around 1:45 p.m. on Monday, according to a statement from the NYPD. They discovered Smith inside apartment 4F, lying unconscious and unresponsive in a bed. EMS pronounced him dead on the scene.
Smith was CEO of the investment firm Infraccess, the NY Post reports. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Smith was a native of Geraldton in Western Australia, according to his Facebook page. His bio reads, "Australian loving life in New York City. [B]ounding like a kangaroo from one experience to another."
The Daily News reports that Smith was discovered by a house guest—a friend from Bogota, Columbia. The guest reportedly told police that Smith had an unidentified visitor around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. The Bogota friend did not see that guest and discovered his friend hours later, he said.
The NY Post reports that Smith may have been having sex with an acquaintance just before his death, citing anonymous department sources. "A roommate heard a guy in there with him. He heard them having sex," according to the source.
"There were text messages exchanged and Facebook stuff where he's hooking up with this [same] guy," the source added.
No arrests have been made as of Tuesday, and an investigation into the death is ongoing. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
