A 21-year old woman was killed on Long Island yesterday after her ex-boyfriend accidentally ran her over in his car. The victim, Krystal Berkowitz, had refused to ride home with her ex because he was intoxicated, Newsday reports.
According to Suffolk police, Berkowitz opted to walk home along Nesconset Highway in Setauket, Long Island, instead of ride home with 23-year-old Lawrence Pagano. When Pagano attempted to pull over and talk to her, police say he accidentally hit her with his car.
"I can't even quantify how hard it must have hit him because he loved the girl," a mutual friend told Newsday. "They were best friends. He's got to be killing himself on the inside right now."
Authorities arrived to find Pagno attempting to help Berkowitz, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Pagno was charged with DWI, and scheduled for arraignment in Central Islip later today.
Although the two were no longer dating, The Post reports that they remained good friends.
