The main surge of Hurricane Sandy hasn't quite reached us yet (though will soon), but today her outer edges have been packing a punch. All over town trees are falling, awnings are being blown off storefronts, and on a larger level a crane is now dangling above West 57th Street... and the winds are now picking up. Hopefully you are safely inside your homes and not planning on leaving anytime soon—but you can click through for what the scene is like outside.
And if you do venture out and see a fallen tree, the NYPD would like to remind you that "unless lives are at risk, the public should refrain from calling 911 to report fallen trees. Non-emergencies involving downed trees have added significantly to the NYPD's call volume, delaying response to actual emergencies. 311 may be used to report non-emergencies."
