The first day of NY State allowing gay marriages meant hundreds of happy couples tied the knot yesterday. At the City Clerk's office in Manhattan, it was a joyous scene as couples waited for their numbers—yes, each couple received a number—to be called. Dan Choi, the former National Guard officer who was discharged after coming out, was on hand and ended up serving as a witness for the wedding of Lisa Winters and Eileen Scroggins, a couple who has been together for 13 years. Choi even got Judge Doris Ling-Cohan—the judge who ruled in 2005 that gay and lesbian couples in NY must have equal access to marriage—to perform the ceremony!

Katie Sokoler was on the scene for us and she took some stunning photographs.
