Two tall beams of light were projected skyward last night—a test of the city's annual Tribute in Light—in preparation for next week's 14th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
The tribute, comprised of 88 searchlights, is produced each year by the Municipal Art Society of New York. (In previous years MAS has struggled to raise enough funds to make it happen.) The cluster of 8,000-watt lights are beamed from the roof of the Battery Parking Garage on Morris Street, and each is roughly the size of a refrigerator. When skies are clear, they can be seen for more than 60 miles.
Looks like they are testing the 9/11 lights. Glad to see it back, wish it was permanently built into the memorial. pic.twitter.com/L2WPHCVi5C
