2003_9_stuytown.jpgIn the grand tradition of rent law confusion, rent-stabilized apartment owners in Peter Cooper Village, on East 20th Street (the other half of the development that include Stuyvesant Town) can barely make heads or tails about the rent increases management is trying to make. The Times looks at the increases that purportedly stem from re-wiring the buildings in 1999, but it may simply be a way to get older, rent-stabilized residents (some pay around $1000 for a one bedroom) to make way for renters who can pay much more (like $3000). Peter Cooper Village has been renovating apartments to looks like these. One resident, worried about how she'll pay for the increases, says, "I'm frantic. They want four college kids in my apartment."
