And New York City has had its first subway-related death of 2013. According to the MTA at 5:21 a.m. a woman was struck by an uptown 2 train at the Penn Station stop and was declared dead on arrival.
This latest incident comes after a particularly grim 2012 for the MTA in which 139 people were struck and 54 people were killed by the Authority's trains (a five year high). It was not immediately clear if this morning's incident was an accident or not. In New York City subway deaths make up seven percent of reported suicides.
