A person was injured after falling from an East Village building onto a neighboring roof while trying to retrieve his drone. The victim apparently constructed a rope made out of sheets to scale down the wall but slipped.
The police responded to a 911 call just before 5 p.m. yesterday afternoon, and found a person in his 50s on top of 535 East 12th Street. A police sergeant at the scene says the victim was a woman, but this morning an NYPD spokesman said it was a man. Witnesses say the person had been seen flying the drone on the roof of 531-533 East 12th Street in the hour before the device crashed.
Due to the complexity of the fall, the FDNY and NYPD's ESU had to perform a high-angle rescue utilizing an FDNY tower ladder. The building where the victim fell, 535 East 12th, is an abandoned building and access was limited due to security measures taken to secure that building from squatters.
The victim taken to Bellevue Hospital with head trauma. The drone, which was a Yuneec Typhoon Hexacopter that costs nearly $1,000, was also retrieved.
