The troubles keep coming for deposed Bronxchester State Senator Pedro Espada Jr.. On top of those embezzling charges he and his son are facing we can now add two more charges of corruption. But remember, to Espada two can be the same as one, so it isn't as bad as it looks.
Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn today unveiled two new charges against Espada, that he made false statements, including an allegation that he "intentionally under-reported his salary when submitting forms related to his medical business, Soundview Health Center." Both Pedro and his son Pedro G. Espada are to be arraigned on the new charges next Wednesday while they await their trial in March. As you'll recall from last year, the Espadas have previously been accused of taking more than $500,000 from the Soundview Health Care Network (which received roughly $1 million a year in federal funds) for their personal expenses—which included Broadway shows, sporting events, fancy dinners and, oh, yeah, a luxury car. And did we mention the tax evasion charges?
Espada's lawyer Susan Necheles has previously said that her client "is steadfast in his desire to fight the charges and maintains that he is not guilty of any misdeeds" but she has not returned our call regarding these latest charges.
