The 56-year-old Queens man who was punched in the face by a stranger in Woodside this weekend has died, according to authorities.
The NYPD says that Roberto Martires was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital yesterday. According to police, he was brutally assaulted on Roosevelt Ave at around midnight on Saturday, just a few blocks from where he lived. He suffered critical injuries.
A friend who was walking with him at the time told WABC 7 that Martires's attacker asked him if he was Filipino before punching him. "Because he's wearing a shirt you know, Manny Pacquaio jersey and they say you Filipino? and say like Filipino? Pop! that's it," the friend, Abet Manuel, told the station.
No arrests have been made, and the NYPD says the investigation is ongoing.
