A 31-year-old Brooklyn man was crossing 51st Street in Sunset Park last night when he was fatally struck by the driver of a BMW sedan. The victim, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center in critical condition with head trauma, and later succumbed to his injuries. “The car threw him and then kept going,” said witness Luis Delrio, who saw the driver hit the victim around 7 p.m. and attempt to flee the scene, headed north. But police say he didn't get far.

The driver, whom police have identified as 28-year-old Javier Hernandez, crashed into another car several blocks away, at 48 Street and 3 Avenue. Police apprehended him there, and criminal charges are pending. We'll update as more information becomes available.
