A 64-year-old man was fatally struck by a private bus driver in Midwood yesterday while attempting to cross a street within the crosswalk.

The NYPD says that at about 2:11 p.m. yesterday, Martin Hernandez Tufino, 64, was crossing from south to north on Avenue M at Coney Island Avenue when a private bus driver traveling down Coney Island Avenue made a right turn and struck him. Tufino, who was struck only a few blocks from his home, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say Tufino was crossing within a marked crosswalk.

According to the Daily News, the bus was carrying about a dozen mentally disabled adults when it struck Tufino. Witnesses told the tabloid that the victim was caught under the bus's front wheels, and suffered a fatal head injury. No one else was hurt. The bus driver stayed at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing, though no arrests have been made.

Last week, an MTA bus driver was arrested and charged with failure to yield after he struck and seriously injured a 15-year-old girl in Williamsburg. The Transit Worker's Union vehemently opposed his arrest.
