A 59-year-old woman is dead after the driver of a white minivan crashed into her early this morning on the edge of Sunset Park and Borough Park, then fled the scene.

Marlene Zotti was walking with a walker and loaded down with groceries as police say she crossed Ninth Avenue mid-block near 42nd Street shortly before 12:30 a.m. The driver was traveling northbound when he or she hit Zotti. The driver didn't stop, turning east on 42nd, according to police.

Paramedics transported Zotti to Lutheran Medical Center and doctors there pronounced her dead. Zotti was less than a block from her home on 42nd Street when she was hit.

"She was just a giver, a great person," Robert Medina, Zotti's brother, told NBC. "Seeing her stuff and her cart smashed like that, it's really devastating."

The block was the scene of eight crashes in 2014, city data show, including one that injured a cyclist and one that injured a pedestrian.
