PATH riders are paying 12.5% more for fares, as the agency's fare hikes went into effect at 3 a.m. today. Fares are now $2.25, up from $2.00—and fares will continue to go up by a quarter each year through 2015.

That decision for a graduated fare hike was made last year, after the agency initially mulled an immediate $1 fare hike. You can read the decision here (PDF). As one person who spends $13.50 a day commuting on the PATH and NJ Transit "joked" to the Star-Ledger, "I need to find a new job."
