A rollerblader was killed and five other people were injured after a speeding driver crashed his car in Brownsville last night, according to the NYPD.
A police spokesperson said that the cops responded to a call at around 8:30 last night about a crash involving multiple vehicles at Pitkin Avenue and Powell Street. When they arrived on the scene, the police found an unresponsive 21-year-old man who had been rollerblading and was apparently struck by the driver of the car in the intersection. The 21-year-old rollerblader was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to PIX11, the rollerblader was struck so hard by the driver that his rollerblades flew off his body and broke the window of a nearby van. The driver kept going even after striking the rollerblader and dragged his body until he hit more cars.
Police say that five other people were taken to Brookdale Hospital as a result of the crash, after the driver also struck parked cars and cars that were waiting at a stop sign. "He hit my car, the car in front of me, also a car with a woman that was pregnant with her kid, and also this van and another car," a witness told CBS.
The police spokesperson said that the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad is still investigating the incident. The spokesperson also said that the driver, a 37-year-old man, was arrested, is still in police custody and that charges against him are pending.
