Off-duty firefighter Lt. Charles Marshall was windsurfing off Breezy Point yesterday, but a riptide swept him into the cold waters. When his friends realized he was missing, they called 911. The NYPD's Air and Sea Rescue team searched for him for a while before one officer saw Marshall "bobbing in 6- to 8-foot-high waves."
NYPD divers rescued him a few miles from the shore. A diver said that Marshall's dry suit "saved his life," and in the 50-degree waters, he would have only survived another hour. Marshall's wife Cindi said, "It was ironic that he would have to be rescued from water not fire. Even on his vacation, he gets in trouble."
