An off-duty Rikers Island corrections officer who decided the police had failed to sufficiently punish his son for shoplifting on Saturday decided to take matters into his own hands, allegedly shooting his 17-year-old son in the stomach with a 9-mm. handgun.

39-year-old Robert Smalls was apparently unsatisfied by the desk appearance required by the NYPD after his son, Quasaun, was caught lifting drill-bits from a Queens Home Depot, the Daily News reports. When Qasaun arrived home early Sunday, he and his father began sparring in their Woodside apartment, the argument allegedly culminating in Smalls putting a bullet in his son's midsection.

Smalls, however, denied that he intentionally shot his son; according to ABC, he told investigators that he thought someone was breaking into his apartment, and reacted by firing the shots.

Quasaun was taken to Elmurst hospital in stable condition, and Smalls has been charged with felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
