New video of the suspects involved in the shooting of a Cuomo administration lawyer shows two armed men running into a Brooklyn building. The victim, Carey Gabay, remains in a coma.
According to police, Gabay, 43, was walking north on Bedford Avenue, between Sullivan Place and Montgomery Street, in Brooklyn around 3:41 a.m. on Monday, September 7th when the incident happened. He had been out to enjoy the J'ouvert celebrations "when multiple shots were fired in front of 1680 Bedford Avenue."
Gabay, first deputy counsel for Empire State Development, apparently ducked between two cars when the shots broke out, but he was struck in the head. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he is in critical condition and is in a medically-induced coma.
The video shows the two male suspects inside 1680 Bedford Avenue. Police have released a sketch of one of the suspects as well.
A vigil was held for Gabay on Thursday evening, and elected officials struggled with how to tamp down the violence which many suggested was not involved directly with J'ouvert. City Councilmember Laurie Cumbo said, "The same level of violence that we saw happen that weekend is the same level of violence that happens, unfortunately, in the summer months all throughout. It's really about resources, about programming. How do we get the resources in our community to effectively make an impact?"
And Assemblywoman Diana C. Richardson said, "In our district there is no Boys & Girls Club, there is no YMCA. There is no place for youth to come together, for us to celebrate accomplishments together, for us to get to know one another. Because that sense of community is missing, we continuously have youth who are idle."
Authorities believe that warring gangs were shooting at each other and Gabay was not an intended target.
