It's hard to say what's more shocking about this story: that a law enforcement officer would (allegedly!) hit someone with a car and drive away, or that the NYPD would actually spend months investigating a motor vehicle accident. After an eleven week investigation—yes, investigation—the NYPD arrested Lieutenant Elton Cohn last night for allegedly hitting an 18-year-old woman in Williamsburg when he was off-duty. It gets weirder: the woman sustained minor injuries, and yet the NYPD investigated anyway?! Down's the new up! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!

The NYPD press office announced last night that Lt. Cohn has been suspended and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to exercise due care, and failure to stop at a stop sign. His unidentified victim was hit back in July at the intersection of Knickerbocker Avenue and Grattan Street in Williamsburg, but details about her minor injuries have not been disclosed. According to the city, Lt. Cohn is a highly decorated 15-year-veteran who was named Community Officer of the Year.
