A gunman opened fire at the Capital Gazette newspaper offices in Annapolis, Maryland on Thursday afternoon, killing several people and injuring more, ABC news reports. The Capital Gazette itself reports that five people have been killed, with more gravely injured.
During a livestreamed press conference, Anne Arundel County officials confirmed that there were multiple fatalities and "serious" injuries. Officials also said the shooter was in custody and was currently being interviewed by detectives. The unidentified man reportedly had no identification and is not cooperating with investigators at this time.
As a precaution, the NYPD has sent officers to various media outlets around the city. "The NYPD has deployed counterterrorism teams to media organizations in and around New York City," Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism and Intelligence John Miller said in a statement. "These deployments are not based on specific threat information, but rather out of an abundance of caution until we learn more about the suspect and motives behind the Maryland shooting." In an email, NYPD spokesman Sgt. Brendan Ryan declined to comment on specific locations, citing "security concerns."
On Twitter, it appeared that police officers were stationed outside of Fox News New York, ABC New York, CBS New York, and the Huffington Post and New York Times newsrooms.
