A sad story for animal lovers and generally decent people: An East Harlem resident was jailed today in upstate New York for allegedly kicking a seagull so hard it had to be euthanized.

Jeremy Lowengard, 20, was charged with torturing or injuring an animal under state Agriculture and Markets Law, a misdemeanor. Witnesses told the Canandaigua City Police that Lowengard kicked the bird outside of a shopping center in the town on Tuesday. He was jailed on $1,000 bail, and police did not know if Lowengard had a lawyer.

Although the seagull-kicking motives remain unclear, according to Lowengard's profile on the Student Conservation Association website, he "loves being outdoors and working with my hands. I am also hoping to maybe be a crew leader myself some day and teach other young students the skills that I have learned on my SCA experiences."
