Our own Upton, NY National Weather Service office is having an open house on Sunday, August 8th from 10:00 am - 3:30 pm. (Gothamist enjoys their method of invitation). Located in eastern Long Island, Upton, NY may not be the most convenient location to go visit from the city, but that's why Gothamist is giving everyone a couple of weeks notice. Before Oct, 1993 they were located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
During the open house, the National Weather Service will be conducting 30 minute tours, giving short hurricane presentations, and will launch a weather balloon in the afternoon. It sounds like the perfect opportunity to get our weather geek on and check out some very cool gear.
A VISIT TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE (NWS) IS THE MAIN FEATURE OF THE DAY. TO LEARN ABOUT WEATHER SERVICES PROVIDED BY YOUR LOCAL U.S. GOVERNMENT NWS OFFICE, VISIT US ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 8TH. YOU CAN GET A FIRST HAND LOOK AT THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY USED TO OBSERVE AND FORECAST WEATHER, INCLUDING THE ADVANCED WEATHER INTERACTIVE PROCESSING SYSTEM (AWIPS) AND OUR DOPPLER RADAR (WSR-88D). WATCH A LIVE LAUNCH OF A RADIOSONDE CARRIED BY A WEATHER BALLOON AND LEARN HOW THIS DATA CONTRIBUTES TO THE FORECAST PROCESS. STOP IN UNDER THE TENT AND LEARN ABOUT HURRICANES. MEMBERS FROM THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY, AMATEUR RADIO ORGANIZATIONS, AND THE AMERICAN RED CROSS (ARC) WILL BE HERE. VISIT THE ARC'S EMERGENCY RESPONSE VEHICLE.
If you can't make it, or want a tour preview, you can check out this "virtual" tour (ooooooh!) which was put together by one of their interns in 1998.
