A woman was waiting for a NJ Transit train with her two children and their grandmother yesterday afternoon when a man they'd never met before grabbed the two boys and allegedly tried to push them in front on an oncoming train. "As the train was slowing to come into the station, the two boys stood up and moved closer to the tracks for a better view," Ramsey Police Chief Bryan Gurney told the Cliffview Pilot. That's when an allegedly inebriated David Howard, 47, made his move.

Up until that moment, the unidentified mother said she'd seen Howard "sitting on the bench to her left, spitting on the ground." But once the boys stood up, the 5-foot-11-inch, 215-pound Howard put the 7-year-old in a headlock and grabbed the older boy by the left shoulder "and started moving them towards the train tracks." Fortunately, the woman and her mother were able to stop him, tackling Howard and getting the children free.

"Neither woman is very big," the chief told the Cliffview Pilot, "but they got him down." They didn't just get him down, in fact, but held him until police arrived. Howard is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault and aggravated assault of a police officer (he allegedly spit in a cop's face during the arrest). So far his motivation is unclear, but we're going to chalk it up to being a drunken psychopath. And maybe bath salts! Why not assume bath salts were involved somehow?
