More from the War On Christmas trenches: a New Jersey Councilwoman has resigned from her post after her city voted to call their tree lighting ceremony a "Christmas tree lighting."
Roselle Park Councilwoman Charlene Storey says the addition of "Christmas" to the ceremony's title, which was voted on by the council on Thursday, is "exclusionary," and she "cannot in good conscience continue to be part of a council" or "work with a Mayor who is [exclusionary],” according to her resignation letter.
Storey, who was raised Catholic but identifies as a non-believer, told NJ.com that the addition of "Christmas" transforms the lighting of a...Christmas tree..."from a non-religious event to a religious one" and "cuts non-Christians out of the loop and favors one religion."
A Christmas tree lighting ceremony is inherently a religious event, of course, though whether that religion is Christianity or capitalism is up for debate.
