A 20-year-old charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon after a fatal shooting Monday morning attempted to casually flee the scene by slipping under the police tape an officer was setting up. Video surveillance shows suspect Salvador Avelino ducking underneath the tape outside the Donut Shoppe at Avenue U early Monday morning. According to the Post, "local residents quickly told cops that he could be involved in the shooting, sources said, and police took the 20-year-old man into custody." Good thing so many locals had such sharp detective skills!
The Daily News says Avelino then fled into the nearby subway station, but was nabbed by cops. Avelino allegedly got into an argument with José Serrano-Muñoz, 23, inside the shop. Avelino allegedly left, returned with his gun, and shot Serrano-Muñoz several times outside the shop. Serrano-Muñoz later died of the wounds at Kings County Hospital.
Police say both men have arrest records, and one Donut Shoppe worker said Avelino was "a loner. He was very quiet." Serrano-Muñoz reportedly moved to the city about two years ago, and was working in a pizza shop to support his parents and 2-year-old son back in Mexico.
