Smarty Jones will try for the Triple CrownToday is Gothamist Sports's lucky day getting so much attention. Tomorrow will bring the 136th running of the Belmont Stakes where, with a little luck of his own, Smarty Jones will attempt to become racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner.

Belmont is hoping this will translate into a record turnout, but frankly the weather doesn't look so great. Weather.com's hourly forecast is calling for a chance of rain to start around 7am and continue through post time with some moderate winds at 15mph. While this will dampen the turnout and might keep Belmont from breaking their 2002 record of 103,222 people, they are still predicting up to 120,000 in attendance.

The weather may not bother Smarty Jones much though as he and jockey have proven they can handle the muddy and sloppy conditions. And owner Roy Chapman was confident in an interview yesterday.

"A little rain wouldn't hurt us Saturday," Chapman said. "Smarty loves an off track."

It may be messy, but Gothamist, who is usually not a big racing fan, is excited.
