Just after 3 a.m. this morning, a 32-year-old woman outside Brookdale Hospital, where one of her children was admitted, was fatally shot at Hegeman Avenue and East 98th Street. Police found Shalema Gaskin with a gunshot wound to her neck.

Gaskin was shot right behind the hospital, and her mother was stunned, "This is a hospital! We come here for help -- not to have our people killed right outside." Gaskin's mother added, "My daughter came out outside, probably to smoke a cigarette. She didn't tell anyone she was leaving, because she was planning on going back inside." Witnesses apparently told the police that "a passerby shot her once in the neck and then coolly walked away."

Gaskin's eight-year-old daughter is in the hospital for an asthma attack; she also had two other children. Her aunt told NY1, "Her birthday is on the 20th of this month. She'd have been 32 years old. She should have never died."

The police are continuing to investigate the shooting.
