A 33-year-old Yonkers woman has been charged with murder after allegedly throwing her newborn baby girl out of the window of her boyfriend's 7th floor apartment in the Bronx. The infant, who died, still had her umbilical cord attached when her body was discovered.
Jennifer Berry, 33, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. Police allege that she concealed her pregnancy from friends and family, telling her boyfriend of about a year that she'd had an abortion—authorities say she confessed to giving birth to the baby in the shower, then threw her out the window sometime later.
The body was found in an alleyway by the building superintendent at around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. The Medical Examiner's office ruled the death a homicide. "I saw the blood,” one neighbor told the Times. "It was a mess. When I heard the police say ‘baby, that’s what crushed me." A friend of Berry's boyfriend told the paper she was shocked by the news. "You literally must have hit the lowest of the low for you to do that," she said. "There’s no explanation for that. It’s a newborn."
Berry, who told authorities she panicked after the baby was born because the she wasn't breathing, was once briefly employed by NYC Administration for Children's Services, working as a child protective specialist in children welfare from July 2007 to January 2008.
Her boyfriend, who was not identified, was questioned but reportedly told investigators he didn't know Berry was pregnant. He has since been released.
