Not weather related but too good to pass up: Austrians Urged to Count Dog Droppings. Even the file name is excellent.
Okay, on with the rain. Once in a while when Gothamist prepares these posts we see something on a weather map that we think will affect our weather that the professional forecasters don't seem to think is important. Unlike the hours they spend making a forecast, we spend minutes writing this stuff up, so we tend to defer to their expertise. On Wednesday we saw a disturbance over Georgia and wondered whether it would a weathermaker for us in a couple of days. The Weather Service and the Weather Channel didn't mention it and said we'd have clearing skies today. Fools! After reading the Wall Street Journal's Numbers Guy we think we should have had our forecast rated by the Forecast Advisor.
A band of heavy rain from that disturbance will be traipsing across the city this afternoon. The Weather Service is estimating that an inch or more of rain may fall in the next several hours, but, judging from the latest radar, it looks like the heaviest rain may skirt just east of the city. Watch out Nassau County!
The steady rain will give way to showery precipitation through tomorrow. Sunday is still looking summery, though. Skies should clear out by then and temperatures will be in the low-80s.
