Tropical Storm Elsa arrived in New Jersey on Thursday night, bringing a lot of rain, strong winds, and possibly tornadoes. The flash flooding in the afternoon and evening had some subway commuters waist-deep in water, and stranded motorists on roadways. More rain is expected on Friday, as the storm continues up the coast and past Long Island.
Parts of New Jersey—like Bergen County—saw under five inches of rain as of 9 p.m. on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. In New York City, rainfall accumulation from Thursday night ranges from 2.94 inches in Washington Heights, to 3.55 inches in the Fordham section of the Bronx, 2.27 inches in Central Park, and 1.12 in Oakland Gardens in Queens.
